Travelling to Madeira and Porto Santo
Travelling by Air
There are lots of direct flights to Funchal, on the main island of Madeira, making it a great destination for your wedding abroad. Here are the busiest routes, but some can be seasonal to check your dates:
- Porto Santo
Funchal airport is well facilitated with good links to car hire and airport transfers. There is a taxi rank just out side the airport and also a bus that takes you into the centre of Funchal.
The island of Porto Santo is much smaller and so is the airport. In fact the runway of the airport spans the width of the island from north to south. There are some seasonal flights from Manchester, Birmingham and London and more regular direct flights from Funchal and Lisbon. One option is to fly to Madeira, spend some days exploring the island before venturing over to Porto Santo. From Madeira, you can either take the very short flight over to Porto Santo or take a cruise on the ferry.
Travelling by Sea
A lot of cruise ships stop in Madeira during their cruise, and some couples are using this as an excuse to get married. Usually an elopement or small family gathering. A car is organised to collect you from the ship, whisk you off to an amazing location for the Ceremony, have some photos and then go for a celebation meal before boarding the ship again and sailing to your next destination.
There is also now a ferry between Lisbon and Funchal, but this is only operating during the summer months but does allow you to bring your car. The trip takes 24 hours and there is even a swimming pool on board... so it is a mini cruise in itself.
There is also a ferry between Madeira and Porto Santo. It is an enjoyable sail taking 2 1/2 hours and you can take your hire car too. There is lots to do on the ferry, with restaurants, kids areas and even a cinema. But the most popular past time for the journey is to admire the view and try and spot some dolphins.
